Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device of the internal combustion engine reduces a combustion quantity of fuel in a combustion chamber, and increases unburnt fuel supplied to the NOx storage catalyst, by changing an injection pattern D to an injection pattern E of delaying the injection timing of after-injection, when the temperature of the engine body of the internal combustion engine becomes a predetermined allowable value or more, when performing rich control by the injection pattern D having the after-injection for setting the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas to the rich or stoichiometric air-fuel ratio by increasing the injection quantity of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber.
