<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of sufficiently recovering the cooling capacity of an EGR cooler without providing a large sense of incongruity to a driver. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control device for an internal combustion engine comprises an EGR device having the EGR cooler and a cooler front catalyst for oxidizing the hydrocarbon contained in the EGR gas introduced into the EGR cooler and performs a cylinder-reduction operation. The control device has a function of controlling the EGR device so that the EGR gas purified by the cooler front catalyst passes through the inside of the EGR cooler when the internal combustion engine is to be idle-operated (S203) and operating the internal combustion engine so that the exhaust gas the temperature of which is higher than during the normal idle operation and which contains much unburned fuel and that the operation of one or more cylinders of the internal combustion engine is stopped (S204).
