The present invention relates to metal forming machine tools, particularly metal forming presses, and to a method for improved operation and methods for retrofitting an existing metal forming machine tool. In order to demonstrate how existing metal forming machine tools can still be used in a cost-saving manner without having to forego the use of more modern drive technologies in the form of programmable servo drives (40) at the same time, according to invention an existing metal forming machine tool, the forming force of which is generated mechanically, is retrofitted such that the existing drive motor (12), such as a DC or AC motor, and the drive train from the electric motor to the flywheel (16), including the clutch between the two elements as well as - if present - the flywheel (16), are removed, and a new drive, which is to say an electric, programmable servo drive (40), is connected to a shaft that has not been removed, such as an eccentric shaft (26) or the shaft of the flywheel, by way of a force transmission mechanism (42), and in the process all assemblies "downstream", viewed in the direction of power flow toward the workpiece, are retained and can continue to be used.
