PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focal position detecting device that is adaptable to a high speed focusing operation, and to provide a camera that has such a focal position detecting device. SOLUTION: A reference pixel line group 200_b is provided with: a plurality of pixel lines PDA_b1 and PDA_b2 in which pixels having a pixel pitch of p are disposed while being shifted by an x/p pitch; and a plurality of charge transfer parts TRANS_b1 and TRANS_b2. A reference pixel line group 200_r is also provided with: a plurality of pixel lines PDA_r1 and PDA_r2 in which pixels having a pixel pitch of p are disposed while being shifted by an x/p pitch; and a plurality of charge transfer sections TRANS_r1 and TRANS_r2. In a first focusing mode, a control section 300 performs control so that there is a time difference t_wait between the accumulating and reading of charges by a pair of the first pixel line PDA_b1 and PDA_r1 and the accumulating and reading of charges by a pair of the second pixel line PDA_b2 and PDA_r2.
