<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device, an illuminance acquisition method, and an illuminance acquisition program by which the illuminance of environmental light can be acquired properly, and to provide a recording medium therefor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image display device (projector) 1 that displays an image according to image information to be input comprises a display means 6 for displaying the image, a detection means 21 for detecting the illuminance of the area where the image is displayed, a luminance acquisition means (APL acquisition part) 78 for acquiring an average luminance level of the frame constituting the image information, and an acquisition means (illuminance acquisition part 80) for calculating the illuminance when an image is not displayed by the display means 6 based on the average luminance level and the illuminance detected by the detection means 21, and acquiring the illuminance as the illuminance of the environmental light. Since an influence of the light of the image displayed can be reduced when the illuminance of the environmental light is acquired, and the illuminance of the environmental light can be acquired without suspending the display of the image according to the image information, the convenience of the image display device can be improved.
