In a liquid filter comprising at least one hollow inward-flow annular disc-shaped filter element 16, Fig. 1, having fine openings 30, Fig. 2, on at least one of its flat sides and supported coaxially by a tubular carrier 14 having at least one radial opening 22 communicating with the interior of each disc 16 and which serves as a filtrate discharge duct extending through a wall of a casing 12 having a dirtladen liquid inlet 13, each filter disc 16 has at least one relatively large opening, e.g. spaced round the outer periphery, controlled by a member, e.g. a rubber O-ring 35 which during normal filtration is automatically held closed by the upstream pressure of the liquid but is capable of being held open during reverse flow cleaning of the element. The fine openings 30 which arrest large impurities in the liquid and also granular Kieselguhr which is added to the liquid being filtered are formed in an upper plate 25 spaced from a lower plate 24 by corrugated gauze 32 and by a stiffening ring 26 secured by peripherally spaced bolts to said plate 24 to provide a plurality of relatively large openings which are closed by said rubber ring 35 which is wedged between ring 26 and a downturned lip 36 of plate 24. In a modification corrugated rubber is substituted for corrugated gauze and the O-ring is wedged between a conical edge of the stiffening ring and the upper side of the lower plate and the O-ring is prevented from dislodgement by an angle bracket. In a further modification the relatively large openings 50, Fig. 5, are formed round the margin of the lower plate 24 and are controlled by an annular rubber valve-like member 235.</p> |
