A method for marking a position of a real world object on a see-through display 104 comprising capturing an image of a real world object with a camera, determining a viewing angle and distance to the object, calculating a real world position of the object, and displaying a virtual mark 304 on the display at the location corresponding to the real world object. The augmented reality system may be mounted on a user's head with the see-through display mounted within a pair of goggles. The orientation of the user is determined and the user's finger 306 may be used as a pointing device to identify the object of interest. As the user moves their head, the system updates and the marked object is tracked. The distance measurement may be taken by a LIDAR ranging device or a laser, and the position measurements are calculated based on additional readings from an inertial measurement unit and a GPS receiver. The displayed mark may be any icon, dot, text, lines or other graphics. |
