PURPOSE: A drive device for a general purpose and rehabilitation running machine and a driving method for the same are provided, which can improve the availability of a running machine and provide various modes. CONSTITUTION: A drive device for a general purpose and rehabilitation running machine comprises: a conveyor driving part(12) driving a conveyer belt; a memory(14) for storing the program driving the conveyer belt; a key pad(18) including a key selecting mode for driving a conveyer belt; and a controller(10) controlling the drive of the conveyer belt according to the mode preferences of users and providing a normal mode and a rehabilitation mode according to an inputted key operation of the key pad.
