PURPOSE: A key pad detecting apparatus and a detecting method thereof are provided to reduce detection time of a key pad by proceeding coordinate conversion about a photographed image and converting the key pad into a quadrangle. CONSTITUTION: A number plate detection apparatus(200) includes an image photographing unit(210), a location detection unit(220), a coordinate converting unit(230) and a number plate detection unit(240). The image photographing unit takes a photograph of an image of a vehicle. The location detection unit detects location of the vehicle from the photographed image. The coordinate converting unit proceeds coordinate conversion about the photographed image. The number plate detection unit detects a key pad from the coordinates-converted image.
