[Also in Group XXVI] A diaphragm-type air pump 12, Figs. 3 and 4, used for exhausting air from a centrifugal pump to prime it, is driven from the centrifugal pump shaft 5 through friction wheels 10, 11. Wheel 10 is urged into engagement with wheel 11, against the action of a tension spring, by an eccentric and a control lever 6. Any mud passing, on completion of priming, from the centrifugal pump and through the suction valve 13 of the pump 12 is deposited on the discharge valve 14 and is forced through the latter when it opens. The eccentric shown in Fig. 3 and the pivotal support for the wheel 10 shown in Fig. 4 may be omitted, the lever 6 then being vertical when the drive is engaged and pivoted at about its mid length, and carrying the wheel 10 at its lower end. Alternatively, the pump 12 may be driven from the shaft 5 through an oscillating beam acted on by a cam on the shaft 5, the lever 6 serving to hold the beam away from the cam to disconnect the drive.
