The present invention provides a method for removing mercury, comprising a NaClO2 injection step wherein NaClO2 is injected into exhaust gas containing elemental mercury and NOx, a conversion step wherein said NaClO2 and said NOx form an oxidant so as to convert elemental mercury into mercury oxide, and a mercury oxide removal step wherein mercury oxide is removed from said exhaust gas.
