<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To promptly play back, at a called-side terminal, a ringtone song or the like designated by a caller upon calling. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A ringtone song/ringtone melody playback system includes: a database 135 in which ringtone song or the like number and ringtone song or the like data storage destination folders are described as listing information; a server 134 which refers to the database in response to a retrieval request, from a called-side terminal, with a ringtone song or the like number as a key, reads out a corresponding ringtone song or the like and sequentially distributes the ringtone song or the like to the called-side terminal, that has requested retrieval, while subdividing the song; ringtone song number selecting/call originating means 122, 123 for connecting from a calling-side terminal to the server beforehand, selecting a ringtone song or the like to be sounded at the called-side terminal from the database and notifying the called-side terminal of a call origination control signal to which a corresponding ringtone song or the like number has been added; and receiving/playback means 114, 115 for connecting from the called-side terminal to the server in the case where a call is incoming or a ringtone song or the like number is added, on the basis of the call origination control signal reported to the called-side terminal, requesting retrieval with the ringtone song or the like number as a key and playing back the ringtone song or the like sequentially distributed from the server while being subdivided while receiving the ringtone song or the like at the called-side terminal.
