PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass substrate for magnetic disk and a magnetic disk which are excellent in impact resistance without causing thermal asperity even when the substrate is configured as a magnetic disk used in high recording density of≥40 gigabit/inch<SP>2</SP>, and to provide a glass substrate for magnetic disk and a magnetic disk which can attain a stable operation even when the substrate is configured as a compact magnetic disk of, for example,≤30 mm outside diameter so that the compact magnetic disk can be mounted on portable information instruments such as a cellular phone, a digital camera, a portable MP3 player, a PDA and car instruments such as a car-navigation system. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the glass substrate for the magnetic disk has a mirror surface machining step of applying mirror surface machining to an end surface part of a glass disk. In the mirror surface machining step, a polishing means is brought in slide contact with the end surface part to subject the surface of the end surface part to mirror surface machining, and then the end surface part is subjected to chemical treatment while a mirror surface state is maintained to remove a crack existing on a surface layer part.
