Amorphous linear copolymers are produced by copolymerizing ethylene with a -olefins using a homogeneous catalyst dissolved in an inert solvent comprising components (1) a vanadium compound, (2) an alkylaluminium dihalide and (3) a dialkylaluminium alkoxide. The catalyst is prepared by first adding components (1) and (2) to the inert solvent in a reactor either together or one after the other and then adding component (3), the reactor having been previously flushed with nitrogen. A gas mixture comprising ethylene and either propylene or butene-1 is introduced and after polymerization the catalyst is destroyed with methanol and hydrochloric acid. Pentene-1 is also specified as a co-monomer. A number of suitable solvents are listed, n-hexane and nheptane being exemplified. Specified vanadium compounds are VCl4, VOCl3, VBr4 and VOBr3. Specified alkylaluminium dihalides are ethylaluminium dichloride, propylaluminium dichloride, butylaluminium dichloride and the corresponding bromine and iodine compounds. Specified dialkylaluminium alkoxides are diethylaluminium ethoxide and dimethylaluminium methoxide. The proportion of a -olefin present in the final copolymer can be increased by increasing the proportion of alkylaluminium alkoxide in relation to the amounts of the other catalyst components present.
