APPARATUS FOR PURIFYING EXHAUST GAS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance warm-up characteristics in a tandem type apparatus for purifying an exhaust gas in which the carrier base material of a pre-step catalyst is composed of a metal base material.

SOLUTION: The tandem type apparatus for purifying exhaust gas comprises a preliminary catalyst 2, and a subsequent catalyst 3 disposed at the downstream of the exhaust gas with a distance from the preliminary catalyst 2. The carrier in the preliminary catalyst 2 is composed of a metal. The preliminary catalyst 2 has a low radiation part in at least one part of a catalyst coat layer, which has a surface radiation rate which is not greater than 0.3 and is lower than a surface radiation rate of the catalyst coat layer in the subsequent catalyst 3.
