PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that makes, for example, the timing of starting image formation, earlier. SOLUTION: A reflecting sheet with different reflectivities is arranged on part of a photoreceptor drum. When the photoreceptor drum is driven, light reflected from the reflecting sheet is detected by a reflection type sensor. The rotational speed of the photoreceptor drum and the angle of its rotation are detected based on the value of output from the detection signal, an amount of change, and the sign of the amount of change.
