<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine-driven air compressor precluding an engine stall irrespective of the operating conditions. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The engine-driven air compressor 1 produces a compressed air by driving a compressor body 2 using an engine 4 as a drive source, and the compressed air is stored in an air tank 3. In case the internal pressure of the air tank 3 exceeds the prescribed level, a first signal is outputted from a first pressure switch 11 to make the compressor body 2 perform the unload operation through a solenoid valve 13 and piping 9, and also to make the engine 4 perform the decelerating operation through a solenoid 14. When the inner pressure of the air tank 3 is lowered below the prescribed level to reach the preset pressure value, a second signal is outputted from the first pressure switch 11 to change over the compressor body 2 into the compression operation. Before the compressor body 2 is changed over from the unload operation to the compression operation, a signal is outputted from a second pressure switch 12 to transfer the engine 4 from the decelerating operation into the rated operation through the solenoid 14.
