Caster assembly (10) includes wheel bracket (22), wheel (20) attached to wheel bracket (22), shaft (24) about which wheel bracket (22) is free to rotate, and a cam assembly. Caster assembly (10) is attached to underside (18) of caster board (12), where shaft (24) is fixed perpendicular to board (14), and the cam assembly comprises cam track (34) fixed to board (14) with shaft (24) at its center and cam follower (40) fixed to wheel bracket (22). Cam track (34) is geometrically formed to have a number of valleys (36) and peaks (38) along its circumference. As wheel bracket (22) rotates about shaft (24), cam follower (40) engages cam track (34) and causes board (14) and wheel assembly (22) to move away and towards each other. The resulting forces generate or maintain generally forward motion in caster board (12), without the need for further efforts by a rider.
