PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately perform focusing control regardless of the position of an object optical image formed on an imaging element when an arbitrary object is automatically focused. SOLUTION: An image signal is sequentially read by a row from the imaging element at a preset time interval and an area including an object is set as a detection area used for detecting the focusing state of each image in each image shown by the read image signal (S314). The focusing state of each image is detected on the basis of the image signal of the set detection area (S316). When the detection processing of the focusing state is performed for each of a plurality of images (S320), a time interval is adjusted by using a time difference between the plurality images from the start of reading from the imaging element to the start of the reading of the detection area, the predicted image surface moving amount of the object in the next reading from the imaging element is determined from the adjusted time interval and the focusing state to determine a lens drive amount (S322 and S323).
