PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hinge mechanism, which is compact in a single structure, by which a rotation torque of desired magnitude different in forward and backward directions can be obtained, and which is capable of stopping or retaining a rotating object stably. SOLUTION: The hinge mechanism includes: a first member 1 and a second member 2, which can relatively rotate within a set range of angles; an elastic member 3; and a housing member 4. The member 1 has projections, and the member 2 is provided with two or more recessed parts receiving the projections, and inclined planes on the faces between those recessed parts. When the member 1 and the member 2 rotate relatively at an angle in the set range, the projections slide on the inclined planes and move between the recessed parts, when the elastic member 3 is receiving a pressure force that pressurizes the member 2. The member 2 also moves in the direction of center axial line. When the projection slides on the inclined face, the elongation and contraction of the elastic member 3 in the direction of the center axial line decreases or increases the pressure applied between the member 1 and member 2.
