PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved telephone system 10 over a single telephone line in a residence or the other building, supporting features of an exchanger and enabling easy expansion for multiple external lines. SOLUTION: The present telephone wiring is used as a medium for a local data communication network, carrying multiple voice channels. In each outlet 88a, 105a, one or more voice channels are converted into a standard telephone-line interface. A life-line function is provided by using a further low band of the spectrum isolated from the data communication network, and a dedicated connector 91 in the outlet provides access to this band.
