<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of controlling a mold clamping device capable of engaging a safety device reliably at the position of the completion of a mold opening. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method of controlling a mold clamping device 13 equipped with a safety device 6 composed of a safety rod 7 having a plurality of engagement steps 9 and an engagement plate 10 configured so as to allow engagement in the engagement steps 9 at the opening of the safety door. Adjustment is applied to the mold opening completion set value D so as to allow the engagement plate 10 to be engaged in the engagement steps 9 at the position of the completion of the mold opening.
