A method of printing comprises producing a latent magnetic image of the matter to be printed, applying said image to one side of a record blank on which the matter is to be printed, applying finely divided magnetic particles to the other side of the blank, whereby the particles collect on the blank at the magnetized areas of the latent image, and treating the blank to cause said particles to adhere thereto. In the machine shown, this method is effected by traversing a continuously moving endless band 15 of magnetizable material by four heads 20 mounted on a continuously rotating disc 16 and receiving signals, corresponding to the matter to be printed, from a wire via a brush 25 and commutator 24 which rotates with the disc. The band with the latent image thereon moves beneath a roller 13 where it contacts a continuously moving record blank in the form of a paper web 47. The undersurface of the latter at its line of contact with the belt 15 is immersed in magnetic ink 58 which may be of powder or liquid form. The now visual image is fixed to the web 47 by passage through co-operating rollers 49, 50, the latter being resiliently mounted. The belt is passed across an erasure device 60 after leaving the roller 13. The disc 16 is rotated by a motor 28 which also drives the belt drive roller 8 and the web drive roller 49 through suitable bevel gears, shafting and worm drives. Belt roller 9 is resiliently mounted through spring-loaded slidable bearings 10 in order to keep the upper layer, i.e. the latent image receiving surface, of the belt in a taut condition. One or both of the pressure rollers 49, 50 may be heated to aid the fixing of the image. The machine drive is so arranged that each head 20 traverses the belt 15 in a straight line normal to the direction of belt travel. In an alternative machine the disc is dispensed with, five or seven stationary heads being positioned across the belt, the movement thereof furnishing the horizontal sweep. |
