Coating apparatus comprising a coating chamber 11 co-operating with a backing roller 10 and having a bottom plate 12, a flexible blade 15 adapted to form the front of the coating chamber and to engage the surface of the backing roll, a support structure 20 for blade 15 including releasable holding means 25 for urging the back portion of blade 15 against plate 12 and pressure means 30 for engaging blade 15 towards the front edge thereof and means for securing the pressure means to the support structure in predetermined spaced relation with the backing roll, is provided with a plurality of gauge clips 40 adapted to be received on the pressure means 30 said clips including releasable means 47 for clamping the blade 15 thereto with the front edge of the blade in predetermined aligned relation therewith while the holding means are released, to position the upper edge of the blade in corresponding predetermined spaced relation with the pressure means, the clips being releasable and removable from the blade following actuation of the holding means to the holding position. The clips have shoulders 44 to accurately position them on bar 31 on the support structure 20. In use the blade 15 with clips 40 thereon is mounted on the bar 31 with the shoulder 44 of clips 40 in engagement therewith whilst the chamber 11 is in a lowered position (not shown) and the support 20 in its retracted position shown in broken lines. The use of the clips ensures accurate positioning of the blade on the support means. The support 20 is then swung to the advanced position and air pressure applied to tube 25 so as to lock the back portion of blade 15 against bottom plate 12. The clips 40 can then be removed and the chamber 11 raised to its operating position where the front edge of blade 15 is pressed yieldingly against the surface of roll 10 by air pressure tube 30 |
