<p>A composition comprises (1) a condensation product of an aldehyde e.g. formaldehyde with an acrylamide interpolymer at least some of the alkylol groups derived from the aldehyde being etherified and (2) an oil-modified alkyd resin, a polyvinyl resin, an epoxidized oil which is an epoxy fatty acid ester derived from a higher fatty acid containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms, or an epoxy resin which is a polyether derivative of a polyhydric phenol containing epoxide groups and free from functional groups other than the epoxide and hydroxyl groups. Specified acrylamide interpolymers are those with styrene, with styrene plus ethyl acrylate, with vinyl toluene, and with styrene plus ethylacrylate plus acrylic acid. Acrylamide may be replaced by other amides, e.g. methacrylamide. Specified alkyds are phthalic acid or anhydride-glycerin, part of the acid or anhydride may be replaced by minor quantities of maleic, fumaric, p-t-butyl benzoyl adipic, sebacic or isophthalic acids and similarly part of the glycerin by pentaerythritol, dipropylene glycol, trimethylol propane or ethylene glycol. Specified modifying oils are linseed, fish, soyabean, coconut, cottonseed, tall and castor oil. Specified epoxidised oils are methyl, propyl or butyl, epoxy stearate, diethylene glycol diepoxy-stearate, butyl epoxy ester of cottonseed fatty acid, epoxy cottonseed, soyabean or castor oil, the butyl epoxy ester of soyabean fatty acid, benzyl epoxy stearate, cyclohexyl epoxy stearate and phenyl epoxy stearate. The usual epoxy polyethers are used (e.g. 1,2-epoxy-3,4 epoxy butane, the reaction products of polyepoxides with polyhydric phenols, the polyepoxides of sorbitol, pentaerythritol and polyallyl alcohol, and the reaction products of dihydric phenols and epoxy haloalkanes) polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol being particularly specified. Specified vinyl resins are copolymers of vinyl chloride or bromide with vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate, preferably modified with a minor amount of maleic acid or anhydride or of fumaric acid, and polyvinyl chloride and bromide coating compositions containing these compositions may also include solvents, e.g. xylol-butanol, pine oil, toluene, mineral spirits, isophorone, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate, hydroxyethyl acetate or methylisobutyl ketone, pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and carbon black, germicides, fillers, driers, vinyl, alkyd or amine resins and silicones. Catalysts for curing the compositions e.g. citric, tartaric and phosphoric acid may also be present when required. The compositions may be cast as films and used for coating a wide variety of materials. Pigments e.g. titanium dioxide and carbon black, germicides, fillers, driers and silicones may also be present as may also catalysts for the curing e.g. citric, tartaric, and phosphoric acids.
