PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve machining accuracy of a workpiece by accurately controlling the machining stress exerted on the workpiece without complicating the construction of a machining apparatus. SOLUTION: A lens machining apparatus K1 grinds a lens 5 by fixing a cutting tool 1 and the lens 5 to a rotary shaft holding casing 4 mounted on an apparatus body 14, and to a tool drive shaft 2 and a workpiece drive shaft 6 of a rotary shaft holding casing 8, and by causing them to rotate and contact each other. A plurality of distortion sensors 11 are arranged in the rotary shaft holding casings 4 and 8. The dimension of the machining stress exerted between the cutting tool 1 and the lens 5 during machining obtained from the distortion sensors 11 and detected by a controller 13 through a sensor amplification 12 as distortion signals of the rotary shaft holding casings 4 and 8. The feed rate of the rotary shaft holding casing 8 is controlled so that the machining stress exerted on the lens 5 does not become excessive, thereby obtaining high accuracy machining result on the lens 5.
