The engine has at least one double cylinder (17) with a piston (10,12) arranged in each of its individual cylinders (14,16). The pistons are connected to a crank drive such that they move backwards and forwards in their respective cylinders in the same direction. Cylinder chambers are formed by the sides of the pistons furthest from the crank drive. These chambers are formed such that they are connected together at least during part of the cyclic movement of the pistons. Independent claims also cover a method of operating the engine and apparatus for adjusting the piston stroke.
