A fluid pressure cylinder assembly (28) has a sensor (64, 72) to provide a signal indicating the amount of extension of a piston rod (36) from the cylinder (34). The sensor (64, 72) includes a sleeve (64) that is fixed relative to a base (42) of the cylinder (34) and passes into a longitudinal bore (50) in the piston rod (36), and the piston rod (36) carries a sensor core (72) that is in the bore (50) and is secured to the piston rod (36) at an end opposite from a piston (38) on the rod (36). The core (72) slides on the interior of the sensor sleeve (64). A connection is provided to the sensor sleeve (64) such that as the core (72) moves relative to the sensor sleeve (64) a signal indicating the amount of movement and the relative position of the cylinder base and the piston rod is provided.
