Summary The present invention relates to methods for downregulation of target genes in a plant by introducing into a plant an engeneered plant pre-miRNA in which the endogenous microRNA encoded by the pre-miRNA is replaced by a microRNA directed to a target gene. Moreover the invention relates to such pre-miRNA molecules, constructs and vectors comprising the same and plant cells and plants comprising said engineered pre-miRNAs, expression constructs or vectors.
