The method involves detecting a signal value (1) e.g. capacitance parameter, and comparing the signal value with an activation threshold value (2). A test is made whether faulty activation of a capacitive sensor exists when the signal value lies above the threshold value. Number of faulty activations is counted. The threshold value is increased around a predetermined value when the number of faulty activations lies above a predetermined number. The number of faulty activations is set to zero when no faulty activation is detected during testing. Valid activations are counted. An independent claim is also included for a signal detection device.
