A generally flat, horizontal structure, e.g. a pavement, roof or terrace, comprises a series of laterally-spaced support members 3 (Figs. 1 and 3) each with laterally-spaced vertical legs connected by a horizontal branch 4, on the upper edges of which legs are supported tiles or slabs 1, and water drainage channels 5, 6, 7, 8 supported on the branches 4 beneath the joints in the tiles 1. Some support members 3 have branches 4 at a height which is not midway between the ends of the members 3, the branch 4 of some members 3 being higher than the branch 4 of other members 3 to support various parts of the channels 5, 6, 7, 8 at higher and lower levels, respectively, to provide a slope for the channels. Intermediate members 3 can have their branches 4 at a lower level, the gap between each branch 4 and the respective channel being filled with mortor or other like mouldable material. Some of the ends of the channels 5, 6, 7 and 8 are closed by baffles 9 (Fig. 4) and some, e.g. 10, are open. The upper edges of the baffles 9 may be recessed as shown in Fig. 7, and saddle-shaped pieces 13 may overlap a pair of butting baffles 9. Channelshaped pieces 11 (Fig. 9) are used to form junctions between the open ends 20 of two channels 5 (Fig. 4), grooves 12 in the pieces 11 receiving the channel ends. Spill members 14 (Fig. 10) having a lip 16 are connected to the ends 20 of one or more channels 5 by means of a groove 15, so that water flows into a gutter 17 (Fig. 1). In a modified structure the members 3 have vertical legs at the corners of a rectangular (Fig. 24) and are interconnected by branches 4. These branches may be at different heights. Some main channels may have short support legs 22, 23 (Fig. 17b) of different height for mounting at the desired slope.</p> |
