<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record information on a normal recording area at all times without falsely determining a defective area as a writable area by discriminating whether or not a detected unrecorded area coincides with the defective area. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A device for searching for the writable area in a write-once information recording medium is provided. A search unit searches for an unrecorded area on the basis of a predetermined address. Based on the search result, a control unit sets a candidate address indicating the candidate of the recordable area, and performs decision processing for deciding whether or not the defective area address indicating an address coincident with the candidate address exists in defect management information. When it is decided the defective area address indicating the address coincident with the candidate address does not exist, the control unit determines the area indicated by the candidate address as the writable area.
