Improving face image by correcting rough skin

Method and apparatus for measuring the skin condition of a face detected from an image and improving the face image. The apparatus for improving a face image in a digital image processor comprises a digital signal processor 39 measuring the skin condition 39-2 of a face detected from an image, correcting 39-3 a rough portion (e.g. freckles, spots, wrinkles) of the skin of the detected face according to the measured skin condition and displaying the corrected image. The corrected image may be displayed simultaneously with the image before correction. The face can be detected in the image using face recognition and the skin condition measurement unit can divide the face into a number of blocks and calculate the brightness of each block. Blocks including rough portions are lower than the average brightness and can be corrected by adjusting the brightness gain for the rough portion.
