A method of calculating the state of charge (SOC) of a battery comprises measuring the current and/or voltage of the battery to provide a range of current and/or voltage values such as by using the error in the measurement of current and/or voltage. These ranges of values are used to calculate a range of SOC values of the battery in each of two or more different state of charge estimation processes. The SOC of the battery is determined as either the most accurate of the calculated ranges e.g. the narrowest range, or as the overlapping values of the ranges calculated for the two or more processes. The state of charge estimation processes used may be two or more of: measuring voltage at zero current, equivalent circuit modelling, or current or power integration. Temperature compensation may be applied. The method may be particularly applied to a battery or capacitor of an electric vehicle. |
