<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic stop device for a diesel engine 10 improved in restarting performance, and a control method for the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This control method for the diesel engine 10 includes: a step of being transferred to an engine stop process for automatically stopping the engine by stopping fuel supply when an automatic stop condition is satisfied; a step of restarting the engine by restarting the fuel supply when a restarting condition is satisfied; a step of controlling operating conditions of an intake valve and an exhaust valve in order to set a two-cycle mode with an intake stroke and an exhaust stroke repeated in a cylinder during the engine stop process; a step of being changed to a compression stroke by closing both the intake valve and the exhaust valve of at least one cylinder in the exhaust stroke if a temperature in the cylinder is higher than a predetermined temperature when the restarting condition is satisfied in the two-cycle mode; and a step of restarting the engine by injecting fuel into the cylinder changed to the compression stroke to thereby transfer the cylinder to an expansion stroke.
