PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve stability of focus detection when a person is photographed. SOLUTION: When a face is detected from an image pickup signal, a face frame corresponding to the face and a normal frame whose position is fixed centering the center of an image pickup screen and which includes the face frame, are set, and TV-AF control is performed using an evaluation value acquired from these face frame and normal frame. If the face is no longer detected after the face has been detected, a variation amount of the evaluation value of the normal frame including the face frame is calculated. If the variation amount is smaller than a threshold, the TV-AF control is performed using the evaluation value acquired from the face frame and the normal frame.
