PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydro-gelling agent having a new chemical structure, and to provide hydrogel. SOLUTION: The hydro-gelling agent includes a benzamide derivative represented by formula (1) (wherein, X represents OH or NH<SB>2</SB>; Z represents amide bond of NHCO or CONH; k represents an integer of 0-4; m represents an integer of 1-100; n represents an integer of 1-6; p represents an integer of 1-6; R<SB>1</SB>represents 8-22C hydrocarbon group bound through an oxygen atom; R<SB>2</SB>represents H, or 1-22C hydrocarbon group bound through an oxygen atom; R<SB>3</SB>represents H, or 1-22C hydrocarbon group bound through an oxygen atom; and R<SB>2</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are not simultaneously H) as an active ingredient.
