PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-stroke engine capable of suppressing the lowering of the output of the engine and the deterioration of the exhaust gas characteristics and reduced in a manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: This two-stroke engine includes: a cylinder 4 in which an intake port 13 communicating with an intake passage, an exhaust port 9 communicating with an exhaust passage, and a scavenging groove 11 which extends from the bottom dead center side end to the first predetermined position in the top dead center direction and forms a scavenging passage between a sidewall of a piston 2 and itself are formed in the sidewall; and a crankcase 7 which extends in the top dead center direction from the bottom dead center side end of the cylinder 4 to a second predetermined position on the bottom dead center side of the first predetermined position and covers the scavenging groove 11 in the circumferential direction of the cylinder 4, in which a scavenging inlet 18 connecting a crank chamber 12 to the scavenging groove 11 is formed, and which is attached to the bottom dead center side end of the cylinder 4 on which ribs 14 disposed so as to face the side wall of the piston 2 are formed.
