<p>A method for the production of a leatherlike sheet material comprises forming a mat of crimped continuous filaments and consolidating the mat in the presence of material affording a resinous or elastomeric bonding agent, wherein in the formation of the mat the crimped continuous filaments have been subjected to tension and allowed to relax before the mat is consolidated, and applying to one or both of the surfaces of the mat a flexible coating comprising polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate, a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl alkanoic esters or alkyl acrylates, a blend of polyvinyl chloride with nitrile rubbers, or a blend of crystalline polyolefines with butyl rubber, with ethylene/propylene rubbers, with rubbery butadiene-styrene copolymers or with natural rubbers. Methods of making the mat are shown in Specification 989,433. The flexible coating may be applied in the form of an organosol, plastisol or solution in an organic solvent, heat being applied to gel the coating or evaporate the solvent.</p> |
