The capacitive sensor system has electrodes, which form a capacitive sensor and are configured to produce electrical fields (102,104,106,108). The electrodes are formed outside a vehicle. A control unit is coupled with the electrodes to measure a change by a former electrical field. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for capacitive detection of an object relative to a vehicle and conveying of information related to the object; and (2) a method for configuring a capacitive sensor to detect a physical change with a door of a vehicle.
