PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a method capable of not only reducing the molecular weight of a compound substantially without causing the elimination of a sulfuric acid group, but also easily controlling the molecular weight by varying the reaction condition, and also to provide low-molecular weight chondroitin sulfate obtained by the method. SOLUTION: This production method of a low-molecular weight compound of chondroitin sulfate is capable of reducing the molecular weight of the compound by selecting the temperature, time and pH for the reaction to easily control the molecular weight thereof substantially without causing the elimination of a sulfuric acid group when chondroitin sulfate is subjected to a treatment (hot water treatment) in a water having a high temperature and a high pressure.
