<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a parking assist system having a parking bay detection function with high accuracy and offering high convenience for a driver. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The parking assist system includes: a parking bay detection means 3 which identifies a region occupied by an adjacent vehicle based on output information from a first distance measurement sensor 1 and a calculation result of an own vehicle position calculation means 2 and calculates the shape of a parkable bay and its position and inclination relative to one's own vehicle, a shift position detection means 71, and an obstacle proximity determination correction means 72 which corrects a result of determination by an obstacle proximity determination means 5 based on output information from a second distance measurement sensor 4; wherein, when determining that the own vehicle can advance as is without coming into contact with an obstacle in the vicinity based on the shift position of the vehicle and on the shape of the parkable bay and the position and inclination relative to the own vehicle calculated by the parking bay detection means 3, the obstacle proximity determination correction means 72 corrects the determination result of the obstacle proximity determination means 5 and suppresses alarming by an alarming means 6.
