The engine (1) has a group (2) of combustion cylinders (2a-2d), another group (4) of expansion cylinders (4a, 4b), and pistons movable in the combustion and expansion cylinders. The group of combustion cylinders performs combustion of fuel and partial expansion of combustion gases at low pressure in a four-cycle process. The group of expansion cylinders performs expansion of the combustion gases in a two-cycle process. Crankshafts (3, 5) are connected with the pistons in the respective groups of cylinders. A clutch (13) i.e. phase-changing clutch, is arranged between the crankshafts. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal-combustion engine.
