<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN mode liquid crystal display device capable of improving characteristics of visibility angles in the vertical direction and the right and left directions in a well-balanced manner. <P>SOLUTION: The TN mode liquid crystal display device has at least a pair of polarizers, a liquid crystal cell arranged between the pair of polarizers, and an optical compensating film arranged between at least either of the pair of polarizers and the liquid crystal cell. The optical compensating film includes a first optical anisotropic layer satisfying the optical characteristics shown in the expression I:-0.25≤Rth/Re≤0.25 (wherein Re and Rth denote retardation values (unit; nm) in the directions of in-plane and film thickness when each of measured wavelength is 550 nm, respectively) and rod-shaped liquid crystal molecules fixed in an orientation condition and has at least a second optical anisotropic layer satisfying the optical characteristics shown in the expression II:1.5≤Re[40]/Re[-40]≤5.5 (wherein Re [40] and Re[-40] denote retardation values obtained when rotating to 40 degrees and -40 degrees by using a phase advance shaft as rotary shaft, respectively). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
