Initial burner start-up via a dedicated inlet (7) uses a fuel 1 forming no aggressive substances, e.g. acids, below the relevant operational temperature. The dedicated inlet (6) for fuel 2 is initially inactive. On reaching operational temperature, fuel supply is switched between the inlets. Steady firing continues above the operational temperature. Alternative second fuels are introduced on a timed or other basis through a multi-path inlet (6). Such introduction is cyclic. During shutdown, second fuel supply is stopped and the first supply is re-started, before shutting down completely. |
