A chamfering machine comprises a cutter support 26 pivoted to a frame for oscillation about an axis 7 transverse to the axis of a work spindle 3, a milling cutter C-1, C-2 rotatable on an axis 31 parallel to the oscillation axis, and means 53 for indexing the work spindle while the milling cutter is in a withdrawn position. The device may be an adjunct to a gear-cutting machine. The cutter support is oscillated by a crank 12 through a connection 14, 16 which allows the arc of swing to be adjusted. Each cutter is mounted on a shaft 31, 32 carried by a bracket adjustable angularly on a circular plate 22. The cutters are driven by cogged belts 35, 40. Each cutter is adjusted axially by spacers 49 and nuts 51, 52. To set the work at the correct height, a nosepiece having a shank and a collar 47 is fitted to the spindle 3 by screws 48. The work is indexed, while the cutters are withdrawn, by a face cam 71, an adjustable follower lever 68, a rack 67, a pawl-carrying plate 58 and an index plate 53. The machine is driven by a single motor 18 which is stopped when a button 85 on the workspindle 3 actuates a switch 83 to denote 360 degrees indexing of the work and the arm 14 actuates a switch 84 when the cutters are in withdrawn position. |
