A clamp for a pair of trouser braces has one clamping jaw 12 on a base-plate 2 and a second clamping jaw 12 on a resilient Clamping piece 7 which is hingedly connected to the baseplate and which is urged towards the baseplate, in use, to grip a trouser waistband between the clamping jaws upon swinging of a clamping lever 1 pivotally mounted on side pieces 3 of the base-plate and engaging the clamping piece 7 with a cam action, and a latching spring 8 which automatically holds the clamping lever in the clamping position after it has been swung to this position but which can be pressed backwards towards the baseplate with a push button action to release the clamping lever and allow the clamping piece to move away from the base-plate. In the construction shown the clamping lever engages the clamping piece by means of two curved cam portions 6, the position of the pivots for the clamping lever being such that the spring 8 tends to move the lever to the releasing position. The spring 8 is connected to the clamping piece 7 by a rivet which holds the jaw 12 to the clamping piece and the spring passes through an aperture in the clamping piece 7 and has an abutment 10 which is engaged by a lug 9 of the clamping lever to hold the lever in the clamping position. The end portion 11 of the spring extends above the clamping lever so that it can be manually moved by pressure of a finger to release the abutment 10 from the lug 9. In a modification the spring 8 is connected to the base-plate by a rivet which holds the other clamping jaw to the base-plate and the spring passes through an aperture in the upper end portion of the base-plate which also receives the end portion of the clamping piece and an eye 13 by which the clip is attached to the braces; the end portion of the spring is reversely bent for manual actuation. In this construction the spring has an aperture which serves as one abutment for the lug 9 of the clamping lever and a second abutment formed by the end surface of a bent out lug the two abutments enabling the jaws to be secured in alternative clamping positions. In a further construction in which the spring is also secured to the base-plate, the curved cam portions are omitted and instead the clamping lever engages the clamping piece by means of two lugs. The clamping lever also has an internally concave operating arm which embraces the clamping piece 7 which is correspondingly curved; this enables the clip to clamp a thicker trouser waistband than the other constructions. |
