PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic endoscope system capable of simultaneously observing observation images by different illumination lights even while using a CMOS type image sensor. SOLUTION: The electronic endoscope system is provided with the CMOS type image sensor (CMOS sensor) in an insertion part to be inserted into the body of a subject, and is also provided with an illumination device capable of freely switching the wavelength of the illumination light in a plurality of wavelength bands when imaging the inside of the body of the subject by the CMOS sensor. The electronic endoscope system performs imaging while switching the wavelength of the illumination light for each frame period when the time needed for reading signals from all the pixels of the CMOS sensor is defined as one frame period, performs exposure in the first 1/2 frame period of one frame period, reads imaging signals from half the pixels inside the imaging area of the CMOS sensor while putting out illumination to obtain the observation images in the second 1/2 frame period.
