PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image reading method which can efficiently perform image processing even if adhered dust is on a scanner. SOLUTION: The image reader includes: an image acquiring means which reads an original document, and outputs image data obtained by imaging the whole original document containing a vertical black part which is a part of the original document corresponding to a position of the adhered dust adhering to a reading plane of a reading means; a memory means for memorizing the output image data; a division means which specifies an edge part of the memorized image data, and divides the image data into vertical black correction data which is image data of the vertical black part, and image part data which is image data of a part except the vertical black part by using the specified edge part as a boundary; and vertical black part correction means which carries out correction processing for correcting image deterioration caused by the adhered dust for divided vertical black correction data.
