PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which can measure the outer diameter of a large diameter tube automatically and accurately without impairing inspection efficiency even when large diameter tubes having various outer diameter specifications are mixed together. SOLUTION: This apparatus 100 for measuring the outer diameter includes bases 1a and 1b through which the large diameter tube P is inserted, a rotating drive mechanism 2 which rotates the bases, a first outer diameter measuring device 3 which calculates the outer diameter in the lateral direction of the large diameter tube, a second outer diameter measuring device 4 which calculates the outer diameter in the vertical direction of the large diameter tube, moving mechanisms 5 and 6 which move the first and second outer diameter measuring devices in relation to the bases, a lifting device 7 which raises and lowers the bases in the vertical direction, and a control device 8. The control device controls the lifting device so that the rotational center of the base may almost accord with the center of the large diameter tube, according to the outer diameter specifications of the large diameter tube, and controls the moving mechanisms so that the first and second outer diameter measuring devices can detect the opposite-end positions of the tube, and then it controls the rotating drive mechanism to rotate the bases at an angle of 90°, at least, in the circumferential direction of the tube.
